I had similar suspicions upon realizing so many of them had the same shimmering effect. There are some menus in the restaurant that similarly dissolve--and those are also tied to wishes.
There is some relation between "wishes" and "death" that fuels this being's power. Nothing it gives is free, and at a certain point the wishes it grants must be paid with someone's life.

If the dead aren't completely gone, then I've adjusted my people a little. Perhaps it's not the wishes that it feeds on... but lingering spiritual and magical enemy from those is consumes.

You had interest in the museum, but I should like to point you towards the well in addition. I've noticed that it has a greater concentration of energy in comparison to its surroundings. The central area does too, but the well in particular has my interest. I believe it to be connected to our dead.
That's actually how we figured out where they are. They've sent a couple missives through the well--it seems to be the most reliable way to contact them, though the letters end up scrambled.

The others have that handled, but I wanted to see if it was possible to get clearer communication from them. Information about the other side can refine our understanding of this thing so that we can identify a weakness.

That is a matter I should like to dig into myself. Precise communication may not be possible given what we are dealing with at the moment, but we may indeed make it clearer.
