It'll take getting used to. [And then there's a hand plopped on top of his head.]
I took a nap. [In the middle of them piecing it together, even though he wasn't really tired. But he roused quick enough to get back to it] I'll sleep more. Are you ready to try standing on it?
Yes! It's going to feel strange for a while. It also may exacerbate phantom pain symptoms, but it also may not. Just something to be aware of. If you feel pain, you should take a bread and remove it to make sure it's just phantom pain and not an improper fit.
[He makes some smaller adjustments to make just a bit tighter.]
I have a syringe of something back here I can inject Mr Al Haitham with that will knock him out for a couple hours when we're done here if you want.
[ Yes, a hand plopped on Alhaitham's head, which will proceed to muss up Alhaitham's hair. It's in good humor, at least, what little Childermass has left of it. ]
That might actually do him so good, Yugamu. How thoughtful of you.
[ MAYBE YUGAMU SHOULD DO THE SAME? HELLO? ]
How will I know the difference between phantom pain and real pain? [ He'll free Alhaitham from the hand on his head now. ] And how am I expected to stand? Am I meant to treat this as if it were any other leg?
[Alhaitham's already mussed hair gets messier. He's been getting this gesture a lot more in the past couple weeks than he had in years--but it used to be common, didn't it? From his grandmother, from Kaveh when he was a junior that hadn't quite grown into his size.]
That's right. [Alhaitham stands, being much closer to Childermass' height, and offers his hand for support.] As for the pain, what you'll want to ensure is that the prosthetic isn't exacerbating it. If it's consistent or reduces once the prosthetic is removed, or if you see marks on your skin, it's probably an issue with the fit.
[ Childermass takes the hand and pulls, dragging himself slowly to his feet — back to two, in a way, with the prosthetic. His jaw tightens, teeth clenched against any noise he might have made as the prosthesis settles against the rest of the leg, and the pressure feels odd, alien to him. He wobbles a bit, but remains upright, though he will close his eyes and will the strangeness away. It is not exactly pain, but... ]
