[What a simple, innocent wish. One everyone has.]

But you knew what it looked like when it was fulfilled? [Or has Lobelia been sitting on that wish with no idea what it's meant to be?]

Hm... not at the time. I do now, ironically.

[Tomodachis..................]

But I suppose nothing in life is free. A wish as broad as mine was bound to have wide-spanning consequences.

[No, nothing in life is free. It's only a question of who is paying the cost.]

And the consequences were all of us in this space?
conchy: (34)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's almost always defaulting to Frenchtanian when speaking only to Alhaitham, so imagine some OUI OUIs here.]

Correct. The same people who have brought me happiness are now suffering as a consequence of my wish.

[They literally only speak something else when they need to be understood by others, which is certainly not here.

Ah. Alhaitham was going to ask about it once he had everything explained, before Lobelia could lose the rest of the story. But it's always been that, huh? Companionship.

Lobelia is the reason he's here, torn away from his life and happiness in a cycle of suffering. Lobelia has also been a bright spot, a companion and a friend that Alhaitham loves despite his better judgement.

It truly was not going to get simple from here.]
And that's why your goals hadn't been completely aligned with the other three, who were here because they wanted a cure.

But if that's the case, that means more than just your intentions have created this situation. Maybe your wish influenced which specific people arrived here, but the potential pool is far too broad to reasonably assume that's the primary factor.
conchy: (3)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-08 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alhaitham is far too kind, far too reasonable. Knowing the outcome of his wish doesn't absolve Lobelia of the crime of making it... but he's at least willing to humor the notion that he couldn't have possibly predicted all of this.

He hums, fiddling with his earrings as he thinks.]

Perhaps so, but unlike the others... my wish preceded theirs. If anyone can be considered the origin of the issue, it would be myself. Had the others been in my position, however, they may well have made the same mistake as me. I can acknowledge that much.

We're dealing with a creature that stretches the universe. Many things are happening that have nothing to do with you.

[He takes a bite of his fish, considering.] Your guilt should be proportional to your responsibility, though I know you refuse to see it that way. So I'll say this: if I have to be here, I'd rather it be with your company that without.

[Why can't be just call people his Friends like a normal person.]
conchy: (25)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Alhaitham... he's quite good at putting Lobelia's mind at ease, even as the edges of it begin to thin and fray. He smiles, taking a moment to really absorb what is being said to him. There are worse fates than being an incidental fool. This is not the same thing as taking lives with reckless abandon, and Lobelia, of all people, knows that too well.

...He cuts into his steak and presents it to Alhaitham's lips.]

Well said. After all... had it not been for my foolish wish, we would not have met, would we? I've known few friends in my life. Fewer still are the ones who can stand toe-to-toe with me in a battle of will and wits. I treasure such things dearly.

[Alhaitham looks surprised when there's stake at his mouth. Not that he wasn't thinking of stealing a bite but he hadn't even asked yet.

He pulls it off with his teeth, savoring the flavor while he listens to Lobelia.

This shouldn't be the most earnest conversation they've had, and yet it's easier to discuss and close out physical attraction and the look of each other's bodies than it is the feelings that even put them to that point.

Lobelia is important to Alhaitham, in a way he knows he should have avoided and walked into anyway because--]
I feel the same.

[He loves Lobelia, not as a potential partner but simply as the the manic and complicated man that tore apart the things he denied himself, who loved and loathed pain because the greatest joy and greatest suffering came hand in hand.

Brilliant, dangerous, absurd, impulsive, contemplative, guilty, and thrilling. And now Alhaitham sits with the information he broke out of Lobelia's chest and all the things he spilled in turn.]

It changes things to have someone you trust with yourself.
conchy: (28)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
[He shouldn't have made his wish so flippantly, Lobelia realizes. Happiness is such an abstract concept that he hadn't thought twice about wishing for it, much less the consequences it would bring. People are suffering at his hand— normal, expected. That he would meet anyone in this place that could show him what happiness looks like? Lobelia hadn't accounted for that.

A fool, indeed, but maybe getting humbled isn't so bad. Lobelia smiles, and it's the kind of smile that reaches his eyes, crinkling the corners. He doesn't know what to say, for once... so he's stealing food off Alhaitham's plate instead to buy himself a minute to think.]

So I've learned. I never had an issue operating independently — alone — but now?

[Mm. Good fish. He didn't buy himself nearly enough time to find the proper words here, but...]

...Well. All that remains is to ensure my wish causes no further harm. You'll help me, won't you?
justscribing: (❖ 108)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-09 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Alhaitham says it because he knows. Because he was used to being alone, and relying on no one else, and felt the heartbreak when he put himself in someone's hands and learned how fragile human connection is.

But then Kaveh found his way back to him, and Alhaitham also learned how strong it is. That Alhaitham has come to rely on Tighnari and Cyno, on Cantarella and Hansa. That he's come to like Nilou, Nala, and Anaxagoras. There are many more people now that Alhaitham trusts, that matter to him.

And there are those that mean a little more because they pushed a little harder and decided to break open Alhaitham's ribcage before he could decide himself. Perhaps the real foolish thing was believing he could just will himself not to care about Lobelia.]

So you're agreeing now that your death isn't a solution for this. [No further harm includes you!!] You can ask me that but not for a bite off my plate?
conchy: (10)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
["Maybe I don't need to die after all" is a sentiment Lobelia would never voice aloud. So he only smiles, quietly pleased, that Alhaitham can read the answer anyway.

He lifts his wine glass and lets it swirl lazily in his palm. The taste is sweeter now, though the wine hasn't changed. Good company has that effect. Friends. People who, without asking permission, carve out small, startling spaces in his heart. That is where Alhaitham resides, and Lobelia finds himself fuller for it.]

Some questions are easier to ask than others. Some answers are simply... understood. And as for demands, unrealistic ones have never stopped you before.
justscribing: (❖ 68)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-09 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[Two men who have spent most of their life believing they only needed themselves and learned hey, friends are great. Perhaps it is worth being seen. In a way, Lobelia is learning this faster than Alhaitham truly did. He thought Kaveh would remain a singular exception in the years after losing him. Then he overthrew the government and now he's suddenly surrounded by people who when they look for him, he actually wants to be found.]

Perhaps I just don't see them as unrealistic as you do.
conchy: (14)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-10 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[And maybe Lobelia has caught on fast, acclimating to the reality that most people are good and find satisfaction in helping others. There's no greater price to be paid... and yet Lobelia still can't help but feel that what he demands of others is much. By now, he understands that to be a feeling he simply has to get over.

He cuts himself a bite of steak. The food is good, granted, but he eats to buy himself time to chew over their conversation.]

No, perhaps not. I do wonder how much I could demand of you before you lost your patience, however.

[And he'd have fun pushing every button he could find, even knowing he would be opening himself up to the same treatment. Honestly, that part's fun too.]

Everyone has a hard limit— a breaking point. Simply... when will you tell me no, Alhaitham?
justscribing: (❖ 103)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, humans aren't infinitely pliable. But interaction can't be measured along a linear line. There are things we've told each other 'no' on.

[Just not on Alhaitham's investment on solving this problem while also saving Lobelia, fool that he is.]
conchy: (25)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-10 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Right again... but you're no fun.

[Can a man be blamed for wanting to rile up Alhaitham? Lobelia sighs, taking a sip from his glass.]

You're cutest when you're up in arms. I'll just have to work harder.
justscribing: (❖ 150)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-10 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alhaitham snorts.] That's because I know you're looking for a reaction. If you want one, you're going to have to do something more than the grating dramatics you use to annoy everyone else.

[Takes a ragebaiter to know a ragebaiter.]
conchy: (31)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-10 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm! Right. Because you're spoiled, what works for others simply won't do for you. I have to give you something unique. Something just for you.

[Hm... but what would that something be? While he thinks, he's stealing a sip from Alhaitham's glass. Who cares if he's being rude? Alhaitham's not going to fuss over manners.]

But I can't offend you too much, or you'll grow tired of me. I wonder... did Kaveh annoy you?

[lol]
justscribing: (❖ 98)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-10 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaveh's repeated detriment to himself can be frustrating, but not what you're asking for. [--And Lobelia snatches the glad just before Alhaitham's fingers skate the rim.

Well then. Alhaitham is going to reach for Lobelia's glass with a suddenness to not be denied, so he can take a bigger sip. They are literally drinking the same wine.

But he still looks amused.]
What do you think?
conchy: (34)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-11 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[They're idiots? They're idiots. Lobelia audibly gasps at the audacity of Alhaitham one upping him with an even bigger gulp of wine. Two men who pride themselves on their intelligence should not be reducing themselves to drinking for sport... and yet here they are.

Not to be outdone, Lobelia tips his head back and drains Alhaitham's glass in one long pull. The emptied glass is returned to the table with a muted clink.]

I think you yearn for the days where he incensed you, drove you not to anger, but right to the edge of it. It's enlivening, isn't it? Knowing someone can stir such feelings in you.
justscribing: (❖ 49)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-11 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Alhaitham's grin widens, polishing off Lobelia's glass himself--and then grabbing the wine bottle so he can drink from it instead.]

I never claimed he didn't stir feelings in me. [He starts to pour more wine into the glass which has now become his.] Though I think the word you're looking for is "passion". You're trying to find a singular explanation but if things were so simple, Kaveh wouldn't have my interest at all.

[Let alone his dedication.] You'd understand if you could meet him. He's a complicated man, but brilliant and surprising.
conchy: (25)

[personal profile] conchy 2025-12-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Lobelia lets out a low whistle— impressive. At this rate, they'll need another bottle... a wish easily facilitated by Lobelia scanning the wine menu, wishing for a bottle of Banyuls. Sweet, dark, refined. Perfect for this little dick measuring contest. He'll neck it, of course, following Alhaitham's lead.]

Mm... and I would love to meet him. But I do enjoy watching you tell on yourself, Alhaitham... over and over again.

[In brief, this man has a type. Lobelia can't help but chuckle, lips loosened by the wine.]

You would lose interest if he were anything short of brilliant, I imagine. But if it were only his intellect you found so stimulating, he would not be such a permanent fixture in your mind. It's rather... cute, really. Your tendency to fixate.
justscribing: (❖ 103)

[personal profile] justscribing 2025-12-11 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Speaking of fixation, Alhaitham sees that's a new bottle and is contemplating how to get it from Lobelia as he sips from the glass again.]

And what about you? Not even death could get your mind off of Ramuda. [Not that Alhaitham is terribly embarrassed about how he feels about Kaveh, because who wouldn't fall in love with Kaveh? But obviously he has to turn it around.]
